The Kim Burrell Don Lemon Controversy and the Question of Public Theology

I want to make it explicitly clear at the onset, which is beyond the scope of today's blog post, that Kim Burrell was in no way preaching a sermon in any shape, form, or fashion. God's Word is explicitly clear on the matter. Women can not preach, teach, or attempt to usurp authority in God's place of worship and the home.
I would further submit as a minority report that women are not to lead in the public square as well, but as I say, I do so as part of the minority in the professing Evangelical community.
Having established that pertinent fact at the outset, let me attempt to frame the historical record regarding the very public Gospel singer Kim Burrell as accurately as possible.
In December 2016, gospel artist Kim Burrell delivered a "sermon" at Love & Liberty Fellowship Church in Houston, Texas, that quickly became a national controversy.
During the "message", Burrell warned:
“Anybody who plays with homosexuality… God is going to deal with you.”
The sermon reflected historic Evangelical sexual ethics long affirmed across Evangelical Theology.
Cultural Backlash
Following the viral spread of the sermon:
Television appearances were canceled
Media criticism intensified
Institutional partnerships dissolved
The incident demonstrated how rapidly biblical moral claims collide with modern cultural expectations. This is precisely what Jesus Christ warns those who seek to follow Him: they must consider the cost. In a word, I say that anyone who decides to follow Jesus Christ in this present perverse generation must put on their Big-Boy and Big-Girl pants.
A Later Public Alignment
Years later, Burrell publicly expressed encouragement toward Don Lemon, a media figure closely associated with LGBTQ advocacy.
The Kim Burrell-Don Lemon controversy ultimately raises a broader question for evangelicals navigating modern cultural pressure: Can public Evangelical witness remain theologically consistent when affirmation is rewarded, and conviction carries social costs?
This moment caused confusion among many believers, prompting questions about whether public theology had shifted. It is most alarming the many times we see people almost abandon their previous moral opposition to homosexuality overnight due to some close affiliation with someone who embraces homosexuality as a legitimate expression of sexual ethics.
The Larger Evangelical Question
The issue ultimately transcends personalities.

Scripture warns believers:
“Do not be conformed to this world…” — Romans 12:2
Evangelical compassion must never be confused with doctrinal surrender. Faithfulness requires clarity even when cultural approval disappears.
If you find my content God-glorifying and Man-edifying, the best way you can bless me as I humbly seek to bless you is to be an active participant. Active participants comment on the blog post (personal notes to me, while nice and encouraging, do not help my blog post grow) and share my content with their networks on platforms such as X and Facebook.
Thank you in advance to those who support my ministry. Make no mistake: I see what I do as ministry. It is how and why I spend considerable time and energy producing blogs and YouTube videos. I do so to complete my fourth-quarter strong for the name and majesty of Jesus the Christ, my Lord & Savior, period, full-stop, and end of story.
As always, keep your hands to the plow and seek to serve for an Audience of One.
With fear & trembling,
