Evangelicals & National Popular Vote Compact: Why Virginia’s Decision Threatens the Electoral College

As much as I can, I create a blog and long- and short-form videos for each topic.

A Growing Movement to Circumvent the Electoral College

Virginia became the 18th state to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, a political agreement designed to award electoral votes to whichever candidate wins the national popular vote.

Supporters argue the compact strengthens democracy. Critics argue it undermines the constitutional design created by the Founders. I predict this matter will soon reach the Supreme Court. We must remain vigilant. I was not even aware of this issue until I was forwarded a YouTube video produced by the Black Conservative Perspective.

The Electoral College exists for a reason: the United States is a federal republic, not a pure democracy. The system was designed to prevent major population centers from dominating the political process and to preserve the influence of smaller states.

Why the Electoral College Exists

The Electoral College was not an accident. It was a deliberate safeguard designed by the Founders to prevent the dangers of pure majority rule.

As James Madison warned:

“Such democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention… and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths.”

Madison understood that unchecked majority power can become tyrannical. The Electoral College forces presidential candidates to build broad, national coalitions rather than simply win the largest population centers.

Similarly, Alexander Hamilton explained in Federalist No. 68:

“The sense of the people should operate in the choice… but through a medium of a chosen body of citizens.”

In other words, the system was designed to balance the will of the people with structural restraint.

Circumventing that structure is not a minor procedural change—it is a fundamental transformation of the American system of government.

Albert Mohler’s Warning on Policy Priorities

In his April 17 edition of The Briefing, Albert Mohler highlighted a broader issue that extends beyond election mechanics.

Mohler pointed to California’s expanding taxpayer-funded benefits for illegal immigrants, including healthcare access and housing support.

Governments reveal their priorities by how they allocate resources.

When a state prioritizes benefits for those outside its legal framework while many citizens struggle, it raises a deeper question:

Has governance shifted from ordered responsibility to ideological preference?

I submit this has been the Democratic Party's plan all along. To flood our country with illegal immigrants, give them access to social programs (all at taxpayers' expense), and trust these recipients of free stuff will vote Democratic. I further submit that Joe Biden allowed unfettered access to crossing into America as a political calculation. He was delighted that these people entered our country. The Bible enjoins us to be aware of the Devil's wiles, and I, for one, will be so brazen as to posit Joe Biden carried water for the Evil One during his entire administration.

Why Political Structures Matter

Political structures shape how power is distributed.

The Electoral College was designed as a safeguard against centralized political dominance.

Removing or circumventing it would fundamentally alter the nature of American governance.

Evangelicals must care about these issues because Scripture consistently emphasizes the importance of righteous leadership.

What Scripture Says About Leadership

Proverbs 29:2 teaches:

“When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan.”

The health of a nation is deeply connected to the character and decisions of its leaders.

When leaders manipulate institutions or abandon moral responsibility, the consequences are felt by the entire nation.

A Question Evangelicals Must Consider

The debate over the Electoral College is not merely political. It is a debate about constitutional order, governance, and national stability.

Evangelicals must approach these issues thoughtfully, recognizing that political structures influence the conditions under which justice and liberty flourish.

The National Popular Vote Compact and Constitutional Order

The National Popular Vote Compact represents one of the most significant modern challenges to the Electoral College system, raising serious constitutional and governance concerns.
