Graduation Controversy: Graduation or Degradation?

Graduation ceremonies should celebrate achievement, character, and preparation for adulthood.
The Graduation Controversy Reveals a Much Bigger Problem
A high school graduation ceremony should be one of the most meaningful milestones in a young person's life. Students cross the stage after years of study. Parents celebrate sacrifice and perseverance. Teachers witness the fruit of their labor. Communities recognize the transition from adolescence to adulthood.
Unfortunately, some graduation ceremonies have become memorable for all the wrong reasons. Recent viral videos have drawn attention to graduates who transformed a solemn academic event into a platform for personal performance. In one case, a young female graduate performed a sexually suggestive dance while accepting her diploma. In another case, graduates behaved disrespectfully during the ceremony.
Predictably, social media exploded. Supporters argued that the students were merely expressing themselves. I argue that the behavior was inappropriate. Yet amid all the debate, a more important question received little attention: Why are we more interested in viral behavior than academic achievement?
The Real Purpose of Graduation

Academic excellence deserves more attention than viral controversy.
Graduation is not merely a celebration. It is a recognition that a student has acquired the knowledge and skills necessary to move forward into adulthood.
A diploma is intended to represent preparation.
Preparation for college.
Preparation for work.
Preparation for citizenship.
Preparation for life.
When the focus shifts from achievement to spectacle, we unintentionally diminish the significance of the occasion. A graduation ceremony should elevate accomplishment, not controversy.
Character Still Matters

Scripture calls believers to conduct themselves with wisdom, dignity, and self-control.
The issue is not race.
The issue is not age.
The issue is conduct.
Every society depends upon standards of behavior that communicate respect for institutions, authority, and fellow citizens.
The ability to exercise self-control is one of the hallmarks of maturity. That principle does not disappear because a camera is recording. Nor does it disappear because social media rewards provocative behavior. In fact, the opposite is true. The greater the audience, the greater the responsibility.
The Literacy Crisis Nobody Wants to Discuss
Perhaps the most troubling aspect of these controversies is what they distract us from.
Many school systems continue to struggle with academic performance. In numerous districts across America, substantial percentages of students are not reading at grade level.
Yet public attention often gravitates toward controversial moments rather than educational outcomes. Consider the irony. A student who demonstrates academic excellence may receive little public recognition.
A student who generates controversy can become a national talking point overnight. That sends a dangerous message. Young people learn what a culture rewards.
If attention becomes the highest prize, attention-seeking behavior will naturally increase.
Lowered Expectations Hurt Everyone

Graduation should honor the sacrifices made by students, parents, and educators.
One of the greatest injustices we can commit against young people is to lower expectations.
Students are capable of excellence if their parents demand it.
Students are capable of discipline if society demands it from its citizens.
Students are capable of dignity if they are raised properly
Students are capable of academic achievement if we set the bar high.
Treating inappropriate conduct as harmless entertainment ultimately communicates that standards no longer matter.
History suggests otherwise. Successful individuals, strong families, thriving communities, and healthy societies all depend upon responsibility, self-control, and character.
These virtues are not optional. They are foundational.
A Biblical Perspective
Scripture repeatedly emphasizes the importance of conduct.
"Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ..." (Philippians 1:27)
"Let all things be done decently and in order." (1 Corinthians 14:40)
"A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches..." (Proverbs 22:1)
These passages remind believers that conduct communicates character.
Actions reveal priorities.
Behavior reflects values.
Public moments matter because public witness matters.
Final Thoughts
This discussion should not be about humiliating individual students.
Nor should it become an excuse for personal attacks.
Instead, it should prompt a broader conversation about what we value as a culture.
Do we value achievement more than attention?
Do we value character more than controversy?
Do we value literacy more than likes?
Graduation ceremonies should celebrate preparation for the future.
That future will not be built upon viral moments.
It will be built upon competence.
It will be built upon responsibility.
It will be built upon character.
And those are the qualities most worthy of celebration.

iT IS ALL BASICALLY CAUSED BY TWO PROBLEMS. THE FIRST DILEMMA IS MAN'S TOTAL DEPRAVITY. THE SECOND IS THAT FROM ELEMENTARY THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL AND ON INTO THE HIGHER INSTITUTES OF ACADEMIA, STUDENTS ARE BOMBARDED WITH THE SATANIC LIE OF NATURALISTIC AND UNIFORMITARIAN EVOLUTION RATHER THAN CREATIONISM FROM A BIBLICAL WORLDVIEW.
