Evangelicals & Politics

Just a few days ago, a professing believer expressed her frustration to me that she did not like delving into politics, as I was debating others regarding the recent government shutdown.

This individual went on to say that she avoided political dialogue because “Jesus was not partisan.” That is a line many people use, and they use it to infer that Jesus Christ is not a Democrat or a Republican.

While they may be true, there is one thing I know with 100% certitude: Jesus Christ would never caucus with the present-day Democratic Party.

Up until the 1970s, there was basically not a whole lot of difference between the Democratic and Republican platforms on major issues like abortion, immigration, and taxation. Of course, marriage and gender were not controversial issues back then, so they were never part of the conversation.

I carry no water for the late deplorable George Wallace, but even a broken clock is correct twice a day, so I will cite Wallace here because he once famously said, There's not a dime's worth of difference between the Democrat and Republican parties.

That statement was categorically true back in Wallace’s day. There were actually Pro-Life Democrats to be found then and there is dare not one today anywhere to be found.

So to postulate that Jesus is not partisan or that He is not a Democrat or a Republican, I think, fails miserably under closer scrutiny.

You see, Jesus Christ lived in real time and space, and He lived under Roman rule. There was nothing close to a Democratic Republic in Christ’s day.

Given our current political climate, if Jesus Christ were a citizen in America, I submit that He would have no involvement whatsoever with the Democratic Party. That statement, while bold, should not be controversial.

A first-year student at a Bible college, heck, even a 14-year-old in a local Church Youth Group, would easily note and totally understand that Jesus Christ abhors the killing of life created in the womb that bears His image.

They would know that Jesus Christ would be repulsed at the thought that a government would legalize, sanction, and celebrate the mockery of holy matrimony of any same-sex union.

They would know that Jesus Christ, the same Person who became outraged that people were making His Father’s house into a Den of Thieves, would allow a child as young as six years old (per Joe Biden, who said such a dastardly and repulsive thing during his presidential debate with Donald Trump) to mutilate their bodies.

I further submit that Jesus Christ would affirm the principle of Subsidiarity in Government. I thank God for His providential hand in ordaining that I attend The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary under the leadership of Dr. Albert Mohler Sr.

It was under Dr. Mohler's teaching that I was introduced to the understanding of subsidiarity and why it is so important and necessary for promoting human flourishing.

I submit specifically to the majority of AAs and, in general, all Liberals who profess to follow Jesus Christ, you need to educate yourself with the Christian ethic of subsidiarity.

SUBSIDIARITY: the principle that matters ought to be handled by the smallest, lowest, or most local competent authority possible, rather than by a centralized authority.

So, I submit that given the realities of our political climate and the options that would be available to Him, Jesus Christ would never vote for a Democratic candidate on any level: local, county, state, or national.

Name any essential political commodity that the Democrat Party affirms that Jesus Christ would affirm:

Marriage 👎🏽

Abortion 👎🏽

Gender 👎🏽

Immigration 👎🏽

Crime 👎🏽

Taxation 👎🏽

Climate 👎🏽

So to postulate that Jesus Christ is not partisan or that He is not a Democrat or a Republican is not particularly true nor helpful.

I can, with relative confidence, posit that if Jesus Christ were a citizen of America today, He would be engaged in the political process and He would do so masterfully.

He might abstain if He determined there was no suitable candidate, or He might write in a name or a third-party candidate. Still, He would never vote for any entity that openly mocks His revealed Divine Will laid out most explicitly in His Word.

One thing I can assert most dogmatically is that He would never vote for a candidate that openly rebels against His Creation Order.

Let me further postulate that He would never align politically with a candidate who openly touts taking a larger share of other people’s money to subsidize others.

While no economic system will ever be perfect until Jesus Christ comes to rule and reign because it is contaminated with human fingerprints, Capitalism is still the best means to achieve upward financial mobility, yet what do we find in New York City? We find a mass of people who just elected an avowed Socialist, all the while Socialism has been proven time and time again to be a colossal failure every time it has been foolishly implemented.

I submit to you that, in most elections, if Jesus Christ were to cast a ballot, it would be for the Republican candidate. That is not to say there is no corruption or controversy within the Republican Party.

The controversial candidacy of one Donald Trump proves that this is not the case. Still, in the main, when faced with the question of which candidate I, as a Christ-follower, can cast my ballot for, I can easily flip the lever or whatever mechanism is present to vote for the Republican candidate.

So, yes, one may be correct that Jesus Christ is not a Democrat or a Republican per se, but I know Jesus Christ would never vote for someone like Kamala Harris yet millions of professing Evangelicals did just that in the last race for the highest office in the land.

So, yes, one may be correct that Jesus Christ is not a Democrat or a Republican per se, but I know Jesus Christ would never affirm Kentjani Brown’s refusal to define what constitutes a woman and endorse her to sit upon our nation’s highest court.

So, yes, one may be correct that Jesus Christ is not a Democrat or a Republican per se, but I know Jesus Christ would never accuse Charlie Kirk of being a racist when Charlie only promoted values and beliefs that Christ Himself would espouse and no one would dare accuse Jesus Christ of being a racist, would they?

So, yes, one may be correct that Jesus Christ is not a Democrat or a Republican per se. Still, I know Jesus Christ would never validate Barack Hussein Obama’s decision to adorn the White House in Rainbow colors, to direct his Solicitor General to advocate for same-sex marriage or to authorize a letter to school officials that in order to continue to receive federal tax dollars they had to accommodate the wishes of students to use whatever bathroom they chose, regardless of their biological identity.

So, yes, one may be correct that Jesus Christ is not a Democrat or a Republican per se. Still, I know Jesus Christ would never respond in affirmation to Joe Biden declaring that he is personally against abortion but would not impose his beliefs upon others.

I know the easy retort from the Left would be to pick out things about DJT or other missteps by Republicans, and that is fair game. Still, as I said, Jesus Christ may very well say pox on both their heads and abstain in a particular election or race, or write in another name, or vote for a 3rd-party candidate.

Yet, there is one thing I know with crystal clear certitude, that Jesus Christ will never align with the Democratic Party as presently constituted, period, full-stop, and end of story.

I have written a book, Weighted and Found Wanting, and I am dedicating whatever remaining days I have left in time and space to trying to sound the alarm because every election cycle demonstrates most vividly that the African American (AA) Church has apostatized.

I write as I do because I am an AA, and it deeply grieves my heart that many people I know and love deeply are headed on a direct collision course with eternal damnation.

My political stance usually results in calls of being an Uncle Tom, a coon, a sellout, and all the rest, but since eternity literally hangs in the balance, that is a small price to pay.

Just this week, I have been called Mr. Ignorance and ridiculous for having the audacity to applaud POTUS Trump for his suggestion of giving a 10k bonus to the Air Traffic Controllers who showed up for work every day during the 41-day government shutdown.

Others refer to it as the Trump Deranged Syndrome, but whatever it is, it is most revealing. Many of these dissenters are professing Christ-followers, yet the Word of God commands God’s people to honor the authority and to pray for them. I guarantee you anyone mocking the POTUS on social media is most definitely not praying for him as the Bible COMMANDS.

So, in summary, it is Stinkin Thinkin to postulate that Jesus Christ is not partisan. Of course, He is!

Using contrasting imagery, Jesus is Light rather than Darkness. He is Salt rather than Sugar. He is High, not Low.

Whether he is a Democrat as opposed to a Republican, I believe, asks the wrong question. Jesus Christ is Sui Generis, which means He is unique, one of a kind.

All I know for certain is Jesus Christ has no association whatsoever with abortion for any reason and for no reason at all, with same-sex marriage, or with gender fluidity.

My simple question to you, Liberal and Democratic voting professing Christ-follower, why are you?

The answer, I believe, has a lot to say about your current standing before Almighty God and your final destination, and I say this with no sense of moral superiority, only as one beggar trying to tell another beggar where they can find a piece of desperately needed bread.

The one thing I know with 100% philosophical certitude is it ain’t (I know that is not proper English) found in the Democratic Party as presently constituted.

So, to circle back to the beginning and my dialogue with the female professing believer, we live in the world we actually live in, not the world we would like, so there is no escaping the political realities of our current world. We either vote for the Democrat or the Republican, or we refrain from voting, or we find a third-party candidate, or write in a name.

All the aforementioned options are legitimately available to Christ-followers, except one: the Democratic Party. Their god is the Devil, and those who align with him will die in their sin.

This is me being as loving as I can, whether you acknowledge it as such does not matter to me in the slightest. I will die one day, it could be today and when I step into eternity I already know what will be asked of me.

Did you seek to match your orthodoxy with your orthopraxy?

Did you warn those you knew where headed to eternal torment?

Did you speak for those who could not speak for themselves?

Did you call Ball & Strikes as you best understood them at the time?

As usual, let me know what you think. Until then, keep your hands to the plow and seek to serve for an Audience of One.

With fear & trembling,

Ricky V Kyles Sr. DEd.Min
