A Michigan Democratic lawmaker recently made a statement that has reverberated across political and religious circle and it is so refreshing that in light of the all the gloom and doom that Jesus Christ is still in the saving business. While I do not expect masses from the Negro community to come to faith, I am supremely confident that God will always graciously save a remnant of faithful people from every tribe and kindred.
The decision by Michigan lawmaker Karen Whitsett has sparked a broader conversation about why an Evangelical leaving the Democratic-Party moment is gaining attention among those wrestling with the relationship between biblical conviction and modern political platforms. I pray this conversation does not fade into the ether and we quickly move on to the new favor of the day. I firmly believe that how one engages politically says awful lot about their fidelity to the Lordship of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
For many Evangelicals, political loyalty has become a growing tension in modern American politics. Karen Whitsett’s decision to leave the Democrats highlights a question that believers increasingly must confront: when political allegiance conflicts with biblical conviction, which authority will ultimately govern Evangelicals' consciences?
Michigan State Representative Karen Whitsett announced that she would not seek reelection and said that she could no longer reconcile her Christian faith with the modern Democratic Party platform.
Her statement was direct and unambiguous, cutting right to the crux of the matter.
“It is impossible to be a faithful follower of Jesus Christ while remaining in the Democratic Party as it exists today.”
Whitsett described her decision not as a political calculation but as a matter of conscience.

Evangelical Leave Democratic Party: A Crisis of Conscience
Whitsett cited multiple issues where she believes the Democratic Party platform conflicts with biblical teaching.
These include:
• Abortion policy
• Sexual ethics
• Gender ideology
For Whitsett, these conflicts produced a crisis of conscience, as they should for anyone claiming fidelity to Jesus Christ. Even a cursory reading of God's Word screams from the rafters that No Evangelical, seeking to be faithful to the Word of God, can, in good conscience, align with the Democratic Party, as presently constituted, period, full-stop, and end of story.
The question she raised is not merely political but theological and one with profound eternal consequences hanging literally in the balance.
Can Evangelicals support policies that contradict the moral framework presented in Scripture? It seems silly even typing such an obvious inquiry, but ask I must, as the vast majority of the professing Negro Church still aligns politically with the Democratic Party.
I admit, they do so to my utter bewilderment, but I have to remind myself that the struggle is never intellectual or academic but spiritual. God's Holy Spirit reminds me again and again how truly marvelous and amazing His Grace truly is, and how blessed and highly favored God has been to give me spiritual eyes to see and ears to hear.
Biblical Authority and Political Allegiance
The New Testament offers a clear principle when believers face conflicts between human authority and divine authority.
Acts 5:29 records the apostles saying:
“We must obey God rather than men.”
This principle has guided Christian moral reasoning for centuries.
Political participation is not inherently incompatible with Christian faith. However, political allegiance cannot supersede obedience to God.
A Question for Evangelicals
Whitsett’s decision raises an uncomfortable but necessary question. Necessary questions that all serious followers of Christ must ponder and resolve, to not sit on the sidelines and just hope for the best. I admit this opens the door to uncomfortable conversations, but I am resolved that if people in my sphere of influence go to Hell, it will be in spite of my dire and repeated warning and never because I could not summon the courage to tell them the truth, as best I know it.
If a sitting Democratic lawmaker believes the party platform conflicts with Scripture, how should Evangelicals evaluate their own political alignments? This is the question I will keep raising as long as the breath is in my body because so many in the Negro community falsely believe they are safe with God, and nothing could be further from the truth.
For believers seeking to follow Christ faithfully, political affiliation must remain secondary to biblical conviction.
No party platform should ever possess greater authority than the Word of God.
Conclusion
Whitsett’s announcement represents more than a personal political decision.
It illustrates the growing tension between modern political ideologies and traditional Christian moral teaching.
For Evangelicals navigating the political landscape, the guiding principle remains unchanged.
Christ must come before party.
